An amazing Russian Jewish restaurant with a homestyle taste. The kebabs are excellent. Freshly made and bursting with flavor. The kebabs accompany the bread that you can get very well. The partially cooked onions offer a nice bit of flavor compliment to the meats and bread. Overall superb food quality. Service is less than desirable. Restaurant seating is tight.

My family of three went here today and ordered very simple food. Three shish kabobs, a lamb samsa (filled pastry) and garlic fries. and a diet coke. My spouse wanted chicken soup but they only had lamb soup with veggies or borsht. So we got two lamb shish kabobs and one chicken shish kabob as well as a diet coke. The menu clearly states they don't accept credit cards and will upcharge you for using them! I paid at the register and saw loafs of bread for sale at $4.00 each but didn't know if it was white, rye or some other flavor. I saw customers coming in for sabbath who ordered bread and fresh large wheels of fresh bread were brought out priced at $2.00 each. I bought two! Nothing tastes like hot fresh bread. The store is kosher and as new customers there is a break in time time for people to warm up to you. Especially if you're not religious and don't speak Uzbek or Russian. I try to get along with everyone and the service was quick and the food was hot. I have an allergy to cardamom (I feel like swooning and tired) which I think the samsa was cooked with but I got over it quickly. It was also a rainy day which added to my blahs. The bill came out to $36.00 plus $3.75 I gave for the tip. There was an additional leaf available under the table which the waiter should've opened but didn't (my son and I are big people). I paid at the register as I didn't want to be there all day as the restaurant closes at 4p.m. today. It would be good if the bakery added the types of bread they make and posted the prices for them. The loafs (unknown type) were $4.00 but the wheels were only two dollars? The place is a bit out of the way and parking can be a problem. I know the dishes they served to my past therapy place (Rusk) was more Indian flavored curries which were not on the menu either? So there must be I believe another menu for Uzbek/Asian/Russian population. My son and I will probably go back but not very soon. as I emphasize the people do warm up to you but it takes time...

I was meeting up some former co-workers for lunch, and allowing me to select the restaurant, I chose Uzbek food. Based on good yelp reviews I picked Tandoori Food & Bakery. I ordered for my group of three a variety of items so we could get a broader scope of Uzbek food. Firstly, we enjoyed the large Uzbek Leposhka bread which was wonderful; super crusty on the outside, warmly soft inside, and also having a nice chew. It was a bargain at $2.00 as it comfortably fed all three of us. Though I wish they served some sort of spread alongside the bread; the addition of something like butter would have made a superb addition. I added a Samsa which was so scrumptious.....what is not to like about a flaky crispy exterior dough cradling a chunky meat filling of lamb meat and mouth-watering fat! The various meats available were vast, but I selected there skewers; one Boneless Chicken, one Lamb Rib, and one Lolah Kebab. The Boneless Chicken pieces were very moist and had a delicious sweet and fresh chicken taste; much of that attributable to it being very simply seasoned. Me and one my friends (the other friend is not a fan of lamb) loved the Lamb Rib which was super tender with juicy rendered lamb fat and (like the chicken) very sweet in flavor from the same simple seasoning. The third skewer was the Lolah Kebab and it was just as good as the other two skewers, as the ground chicken was flavorful with much more seasoning compared to the other meats (there was a distinct oregano flavor). To contrast the rich and heavy dishes, I also added a Carrot Salad which was seasoned so uniquely, and I still cannot pinpoint the spices used. Finally, I knew I had to get was the highly acclaimed Pilav, and thankfully it was available. This glistening rice was adorned with chickpeas, carrot slivers, and several pieces of bone-in lamb. Upon my first bite, I loved the rice as it was so imbued with rich flavor from the fatty lamb. I could eat spoonfuls of the Pilav and see why it is such a popular dish!

If you're looking for authentic Uzbek food in New York, chances are you end up in Rego Park. Some restaurants are better than others, and Tandoori is one of the best. I came during a slow time and the staff let me tour the kitchen...which has a massive stone oven to make the famous Uzbek bread, lepeshka. It's excellent. Also, it's really cheap so come here and order a bit of everything. The samsa are awesome, as are any of the kebabs. You cannot go wrong. The carrot salad is also a staple when it comes to big Uzbek feasts so definitely get that...and plov...and tea...and...everything. So so so good.
